Unitec is the largest Institute of Technology in New Zealand, with two campuses located in Mt. Albert and Waitakere.
Deemed to be old and no longer fit for purpose, two buildings within the Mt Albert Campus required refurbishing. The light interior refurbishments were to create new teaching and learning spaces, social and collaborative nodes, multiple new computer labs and a staff back office. The brief also required an increase in teaching space utilisation from 13% to 45%, so the space had to be designed with teaching flexibility in mind.
Gaze carried out a spatial analysis that deemed more of an open plan layout, allocating the top floor of both buildings for staff use and the lower two for students to ensure the most efficient space utilisation. Interior walls were demolished in the process to increase the internal footprint. Design and product specification selection was important to satisfy the acoustic requirements. Gaze delivered this project within a critical time frame providing an adequate window for construction.
